Integration of Purpose, Structure, and Relationships

I help families, family offices, and organizational leaders integrate purpose, structure, and relationships for lasting philanthropic impact.

Drawing on 25 years in nonprofit and tax law, governance, and executive coaching, my work focuses on relationship-centered philanthropic strategy, family governance, and complex cross-sector collaborations among charities, corporate entities, and communities.

Philosophy & Approach

Real families and organizations do not experience their decisions as separate legal, financial, or relational questions, so the work intentionally integrates all three. Every engagement begins with purpose and relationships, then moves into structure, governance, and implementation, so technical excellence serves what matters most to you.

This approach scales from intimate family foundations to complex constellations of entities. This includes corporate foundations and affiliates, combinations of various categories of exempt organizations (501(c)(3)/(c)(4)/(c)(6)/527), for-profit subsidiaries of exempt organizations, and cross-sector partnerships among community, tribal, and international organizations.

The throughline remains the same: designs that are compliant, comprehensible, and humane for the people who must live with them.

Select Client Engagements

Case 1: Multi-Generational Family & Foundation

A family preparing for a significant liquidity event wanted to build a shared philanthropic strategy that honored shared commitments, varying interests, and different levels of readiness across generations. Together we clarified purpose, designed a private foundation and complementary donor-advised structures, structured a split‑interest trust to provide steady income for an aging parent alongside future charitable gifts, facilitated multi-generational conversations, and created governance practices that gave each generation meaningful voice without losing coherence.

Case 2: Physician Network Philanthropic Architecture

A network of affiliated specialty physicians wanted to create a foundation to support charitable causes in their community, a new charity focused on a specific population, and a related advocacy vehicle to pursue a shared impact agenda. The resulting design combined multiple structures—501(c)(3)/(c)(4) affiliations, a donor-advised fund, and a fiscal sponsorship—with affiliate board governance frameworks and facilitated stakeholder conversations so leaders could act in concert while maintaining clear roles, boundaries, and compliance.

Case 3: Industry Association and Affiliated Charity

An established industry association wanted to modernize and simplify its governance and membership structure to improve responsiveness and member engagement, while also restructuring an affiliated 501(c)(3) charity to better support scholarships, disaster relief, and community needs. The work combined legal and governance review of both entities’ bylaws and codes of conduct with facilitated strategy conversations on board roles, membership categories, and decision-making pathways, resulting in streamlined governance documents, a clarified association–charity relationship, and a more focused charitable mission and grantmaking framework aligned with member priorities

My Two Practices

Synerlogic – Programs, Assessments, Cohorts

Synerlogic is the advisory and leadership practice where cohort programs, leadership assessments, and board and team engagements live. It is well-suited for nonprofit leaders, associations, community institutions, and family offices that want structured programs such as Synerlogic360 assessments, leadership cohorts, governance workshops, and implementation labs built around the Our Shared Legacy frameworks.

Evans Law, PLC – Legal Implementation

Evans Law, PLC is the legal implementation arm of this work, focused on charitable structures, nonprofit and foundation governance, and related tax and regulatory matters. When strategy work requires formal documents or entity formation—for example, private foundations, donor-advised funds, fiscal sponsorships, complex affiliated-entity structures, or cross-border charitable arrangements—those services are handled through Evans Law with clear engagement terms and ethical boundaries.

Note

Some clients engage solely through advisory services or programs via Synerlogic, some work only with Evans Law, PLC for legal implementation, and some combine strategy, cohorts, and legal work.

Coaching and consulting through Synerlogic do not include legal services or attorney–client privilege; legal engagements are handled separately through Evans Law, PLC with their own engagement terms.

Writing & Speaking

Writing, teaching, and engaged conversation are central to my work. Articles and essays explore relationship-centered philanthropy, family governance, nonprofit boards, leadership, and cross‑sector collaboration for complex charitable structures.

As Our Shared Legacy moves toward publication, this section will highlight book-related talks, workshops, and convenings for families, foundations, trade associations, and community or tribal organizations.

Connect with Me

My work is designed for a limited number of families, family offices, philanthropic institutions, and community or tribal partners at any given time. Engagements are custom-built for each engagement. The first step is a brief conversation to understand your situation and determine whether there is a good fit.

If you are navigating questions about philanthropic strategy, multi-entity structures, family dynamics, or governance—and want to approach them in a way that strengthens relationships—you are welcome to reach out.
